EuroTier 2022: Insect farming as an additional money-making enterprise for farmers

Better Insect Solutions cooperates with FarmInsect

  • Robust high-tech solutions for insect farming
    Computer and feeding system

Just in time for EuroTier in Hanover, Better Insect Solutions and FarmInsect have signed a cooperation agreement (hall 21, stand F21). The goal: establishing insect farming as an additional money-making enterprise for farmers. Better Insect Solutions provides the technology, from the breeding system and climate control to the feed kitchen and air cleaning system including heat recovery. FarmInsect has the largest regional network for insect production and delivers the young larvae. If necessary, the start-up can also market the dried larvae.

Livestock producers who take up insect farming can utilise farm residues in a sensible manner while increasing their self-sufficiency regarding proteins in feed. With the standardised, modular system equipped with computer-controlled feeding technology and supported by a robot, black soldier fly larvae can be grown automatically and efficiently. The end result is a high-quality, natural feed ingredient whose production requires little effort. The proteins are usually well-suited for use in pig and poultry feed due to the larvae’s amino acid profile.

Better Insect Solutions

Better Insect Solutions is a joint brand of Big Dutchman, Inno+ and Skov. All three companies are leading technology suppliers in their different branches of the agribusiness. The specialists plan and realise smaller production units with an annual volume of 300 to 2,000 tonnes of live weight as well as larger farms with an annual production of 60,000 tonnes. To this end, robust high-tech solutions which have already proven their worth in pig and poultry houses all over the world are modified to meet the specific needs of insect farms. Reliable and energy-saving technologies thus enable farmers to operate economically from the very beginning.

FarmInsect

FarmInsect is an agritech start-up from Munich, Germany. The founders, Thomas Kuehn and Wolfgang Westermeier, have been working on a solution for farmers to produce insect larvae from regional waste such as harvest residues since 2017. Their concept allows farmers to save up to 30 percent of feed costs while simultaneously operating much more sustainably. The company is Europe’s only insect producer with a location dedicated exclusively to the production of larvae. FarmInsect is supported by the European Union and the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry as part of the EIP-AGRI funding program.

Big Dutchman

Big Dutchman designs and implements feeding systems and housing equipment for pig and poultry production with 3,400 employees worldwide.
