More straw, less stress
Roughage in pig houses: small lever, big effect
Eating. Drinking. Sleeping. And in-between? Pigs are curious. Persistently so. Farmers who plan for this behaviour can create a calm atmosphere in the pen – and make the daily routine more reliable. Big Dutchman offers the necessary solutions, from simple to automated systems: straw feeders, hay racks, pellet feeders, and dispensers – for every age group, manual or fully automatic depending on the housing concept, installed in the pen or in the partition.
Roughage is more than “a bit of straw”. It can promote gut health and therefore improve the pigs’ well-being. And it helps structure the day. The material arrives, the pigs are occupied, the routine stays on schedule.
For additional automation, roughage can be stored centrally and distributed as required. Big Dutchman’s product range includes the optimal solution: a dispenser with mixing blade, discharging auger and transfer unit to the DR 1500 pipe conveying system. The mixing blade keeps the material moving, effectively preventing bridging in the hopper. Then the discharging auger takes over, and the conveying system transports the roughage into the house. Here, the material is distributed to the pigs, where it is needed.
The farmer decides how to operate. Big Dutchman supplies the equipment:
