Early in June 2003, a new house for 200 pregnant sows was inaugurated in Denmark. The special feature of this pig house is that no ventilation system has been installed – it is ventilated naturally. Openings in the side walls, which can be closed with special curtains, ensure a constant exchange of house air with fresh air. Liquid feeding is managed by four CALLMATIC 2 feeding-on-demand systems. The concrete resting area can be heated and is lightly covered with straw, thus allowing the pigs to root. Slatted floors ensure good manure penetration and a spray cooling system installed above the activity areas discourages the sows from defecating onto the resting area in hot weather.
