EuroTier News: Fermentation

Better results thanks to liquid feed fermentation

  • Better results thanks to liquid feed fermentation

The latest studies reveal that the fermentation of liquid feed ingredients for pig feeding constitutes an extremely useful biotechnological method of positively influencing the animals’ digestion and to improve hygiene, thus achieving a considerable increase in production. Big Dutchman has responded to this international scientific trend by developing corresponding modern techniques. The world market leader from Vechta-Calveslage, Germany, will present its know-how concerning liquid feed fermentation at this year’s EuroTier 2002 in Hanover (Germany).

To ferment the grain or finished feed it is necessary to soak the meal in water beforehand, usually for at least 6 to 7 hours, or overnight. This stimulates the development of beneficial lactic acid bacteria and enzymes which assist digestion. The bacteria lower the pH-value in the pig’s digestive tract. This increased acidification also inhibits many gut pathogens.

The correct fermentation of the individual feed ingredients results in improved protein digestion and energy utilization as well as a stable bacterial flora in the animal’s digestive tract.

The positive effects of liquid feed fermentation consist of increased feed consumption, improved feed conversion and consequently improved animal health. Acidification of the feed with supplementary acids is not necessary.
