Britons love eggs from free range hens: in 2017, 55.6 % of layers were producing free range eggs, more than any other type. To be able to meet this demand, Bird Bros Ltd. decided three years ago to extend the family-owned farm by three new barns for free range egg production and one new barn for pullet rearing. Having worked with Newquip on previous projects, the egg producers from Bedfordshire again selected to purchase the housing equipment from the British Big Dutchman agency.

The British Ranger magazine, which focuses exclusively on topics of free range egg production, visited the system installed at Bird Bros. The result is a report worth reading about a dynamic egg producer who is very happy with their Big Dutchman aviaries:

“We think it’s worth buying good quality equipment; then if you look after it – it will look after you!”

The Ranger quotes Matthew and Stuart Bird, both directors of the company.

Aviaries for egg production and pullet rearing

The egg producers equipped their three houses for free range egg production with aviaries of the type NATURA Nova 284. The system is one of the classic Big Dutchman products, and for good reason: due to a high nest acceptance, good utilisation of the house and an intelligent structure of the system, which allows the birds to switch easily between the functional areas for resting, eating and drinking and laying eggs, the aviary system is a great customer favourite.

The pullets are prepared for their life in the laying aviary in the NATURA Filia rearing aviary. They learn how to jump and fly on three levels, ensuring that they know their way around the layer aviary later on. “We are learning each time we start a new flock but we are extremely pleased with the results so far. The birds understand the system when they move to the laying house, transitioning seamlessly,” says Bird Bros, showing how satisfied they are with the system.
