EuroTier News: Exhaust Air TreatmentSystem MagixX

Efficient reduction of dust, odour and ammonia

  • Efficient reduction of dust, odour and ammonia

Annoyances caused by odour, ammonia and dust in poultry and pig houses may soon be a thing of the past. At this year’s EuroTier 2002, taking place in Hanover (Germany) from 12th until 15th of November, Big Dutchman from Vechta-Calveslage, Germany, will present one of its latest innovations: The new Exhaust Air Cleaning System called “MagixX” will be on show at the exhibition stands of the business units poultry (Hall 17, stand D 25) and pig (Hall 26, stand H 15).

This innovative technique will considerably reduce the unpleasant side effects of pig and poultry management such as bad smell on livestock farms. A Big Dutchman spokesman says: “Our aim is to offer a cost-efficient system of components, thus enabling even the smaller farms to comply with ecological standards.” Big Dutchman is so highly convinced of the many benefits of this special and innovative product that the company has applied for the EuroTier 2002 Novelty Award.

After having completed the basic research on this new technology at the Study and Research Centre for Meat, Egg and Poultry Production at the University of Göttingen in Vechta, Big Dutchman has already installed several of these new Exhaust Air Cleaning Systems. Bernd Meerpohl, chairman of the Big Dutchman AG, is very satisfied with the results: "The first practical results are highly promising."

Big Dutchman’s latest Exhaust Air Cleaning System works as follows. Before the exhaust air leaves the house, it is conducted through a thin, honeycombed filter unit. As the filter unit is sprinkled with water it consolidates the dust. In the next step, the filter unit is sprinkled with a sulphurous acid, thus binding the ammonia components contained in the house air. Once the exhaust air has passed through the filter units, the odour is almost completely eliminated.

While the ammonia content can be reduced by as much as 70 per cent, the dust content can even be reduced by 90 per cent. An additional advantage is that the scum can be used as high-quality fertilizer.

One of the further benefits of these new systems is that they are easy to maintain. Moreover, they can individually be combined and modified according to the operational requirements. Additionally, the air resistance is considerably reduced in the new Exhaust Air Treatment System so that it consumes less energy compared to existing installations.

Big Dutchman is continuing to develop the “MagixX” system in order to improve future livestock performance.
